| Chinese politician and prime minister (1987– 98), born in Chengdu, SWC China. He trained as a hydro-electric engineer, and was appointed minister of the electric power industry in 1981. He became a vice premier (1983), was elevated to the Politburo (1985), and made prime minister. He sought to retain firm control of the economy, favoured improved relations with the Soviet Union, and took a strong line in facing down the student-led, pro-democracy movement. |
