| Writer and soldier, born in Brookville, Indiana, USA. He served in the Mexican War (1846–8) and with distinction as a major-general in the Federal army in the American Civil War (1861–5). Governor of New Mexico (1878–81) and minister to Turkey (1881–5), he was author of several novels, including the remarkably successful religious novel Ben Hur (1880), which has twice formed the subject of a spectacular film. |
