| Chemist and inventor, born in Champaign, Illinois, USA. A graduate of Northwestern University with a PhD from Princeton, he went to work as a chemist for Merck Research Laboratories in New Jersey, where in 1944 he prepared the first synthetic cortisone. A collaborator on some 100 technical papers and patents, he rose to senior vice-president for science and technology in a long career at Merck. |
