| Sociologist, born in Berlin, Germany. He emigrated to the USA in 1941, gained a PhD from Columbia University, and then taught at Brandeis University (1951–68) and State University of New York, Stony Brook (1969–87). His books covered the areas of social conflict, the sociology of politics, and history, and include Sociological Theory (co-writer, 1957; many revisions), The American Communist Party (with Irving Howe, 1957; later revised), and Refugee Scholars in America (1984). |
