| Banker and US vice-president (1889–93), born in Shoreham, Vermont, USA. He began as a country storekeeper's assistant, and in 1863 founded banking-houses in New York City and London. He was returned to Congress as a Republican (1878–80), became minister to France (1881–5), was elected vice-president under President Benjamin Harrison, and served as Governor of New York State (1895–7). |
