| Flat racing jockey, born in Wantage, Oxfordshire, SC England, UK. He rode his first winner at the age of 12, and his first Epsom Derby winner, Never Say Die, in 1954. He subsequently rode a record nine winners of the race, and a record 29 Classic winners between 1954 and 1985. During his career he rode 4493 winners in Britain (1948–85), a figure bettered only by Gordon Richards, and was champion jockey 11 times. After retiring, he took up training at Newmarket, but was imprisoned (1987–8) for tax offences, then returned to the saddle in 1990 and won his 30th Classic, the 2000 Guineas, in 1992. He retired in 1995. |
