| Criminologist and statistician, born in England, UK. Starting his career as a statistician and researcher with the British Civil Service (1945–64), he worked for the United Nations in the Far East (1964–6). He went to the USA to teach criminology at the University of California, Berkeley (1966–8) where he was acting dean (1968–9), but he taught longest at the State University of New York at Albany School of Criminal Justice and was named professor emeritus (1981). He wrote many books and articles on criminology. |
