| biography:
| Cultural anthropologist, born in Salida, Colorado, USA. He studied at Columbia University, the New School for Social Research, and the University of Chicago, and taught at Michigan (1932–75). He carried out many field trips among the Pueblo Indians (1926–57). He is principally known for his theory of cultural evolution, propounded in The Science of Culture (1949) and The Evolution of Culture (1959), in which he argues that culture tends to advance along with increases in technological efficiency in harnessing environmental energy sources. |
