| Poet, born in Nabiac, New South Wales, SE Australia. His childhood and adolescence were spent on a dairy farm, and he studied at Sydney University. He has worked mostly as a freelance writer, contributing literary journalism to newspapers and magazines. His poetry, which has made him one of Australia's leading literary figures, is revered for its evocation of rural life, though its personal style and often polemical tone are also noted. Significant collections include The Ilex Tree (with G Lehmann, 1965), The People's Otherworld (1983), Dog Fox Field (1990), and Subhuman Redneck Poems (1996, T S Eliot Prize). Later works include Fredy Neptune: A Novel in Verse (1999). |
