| Historian, born in Wiehe, EC Germany. He studied at Halle and Berlin, and became a teacher. A work on the Romance and Teutonic peoples in the Reformation period, and another criticizing contemporary historians, procured his call to Berlin as a professor of history (1825–71). A prolific writer on many aspects of European history, his major work was History of the Popes in the 16th and 17th Centuries (1834–7, trans title). |
