| biography:
| Soldier and popular playwright, born in Valladolid, NWC Spain. He won his reputation in the shadow of his master, Echegaray. Beginning with historical plays such as El más sagrado deber, he moved into the theatre of ideology and morality with plays such as El código de honor (1881), making a national reputation with La Pasionaria (1883), a forceful melodrama in which a woman avenges herself on her seducer. He attempted the Greek tragic manner with La opinión pública (1878), and the Symbolist with La mariposa (1879). Los laureles de un poeta (1879) seems to have been a parody of Echegaray by way of a reaction against his master. |
