| Chemist, born in Vukovar, E Croatia. He became professor of chemistry at Utrecht (1926) and at Zürich (1929). He made the earliest synthesis of musk, worked on higher terpenes and steroids, and was the first to synthesize sex hormones, for which he shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1939. |
