| Grand-duke of Tuscany (as Pietro Leopoldo I) and Holy Roman Emperor, born in Vienna, Austria, the son of Maria Theresa of Habsburg and Francis I. He was grand-duke of Tuscany (1765–90) when he became emperor. In Tuscany he was an enlightened ruler, implementing economic, administrative, and legal reforms, and promulgated (1786) a new criminal code which was called Leopoldine after him. As emperor, he ended the war with Turkey (1791) and signed the Pilnitz declaration (1791). |
