| Emperor, born in Vienna, Austria, the son of Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa. As Leopold I he became Grand Duke of Tuscany (1765–90), where he pursued a Josephine (anti-curia) policy, and succeeded his brother Joseph II as emperor, King of Bohemia (1790), and King of Hungary (1791). He successfully put down insurrection in Hungary and Belgium, brought an end to the Turkish War by the Peace of Sistowa (1791), and concluded a pact against the French with Frederick William III of Prussia 1792. |
