| Chemist, born in Göttingen, C Germany. He was professor of medicine and chemistry at Heidelberg (1817–50). He discovered potassium ferricyanide, known as Gmelin's salt, in 1822, introduced the terms ester and ketone into organic chemistry, and published a textbook of inorganic chemistry (trans 1849). Gmelin's test is for the presence of bile pigments. |
