| Conductor and composer, born in Poznan, WC Poland (formerly Posen, Prussia). He was leader (1857–9) of the Weimar court orchestra under Liszt, and conductor at Wrocław, Poland (formerly Breslau, Prussia) (1859–60, 1862–71)), before emigrating to New York City. He ultimately became conductor at the Metropolitan Opera House, and did much to popularize Wagner in the USA. |
