| biography:
| King of Sparta (c.491–480 BC), and Greek hero. In 480 BC his small command resisted the vast army of Xerxes, King of Persia, at Thermopylae. After two days he dismissed his troops, and with only his 300-strong Spartan royal guard, fought to the last man. The legend that Spartans never surrender emanated from his heroism. |
