| Writer, born in Würzburg, SC Germany. He studied painting and graphic art, then wrote his much-praised novel Die Räuberbände (1914). A pacifist, he went into exile in Switzerland (1915–18), emigrated to the USA (1933), and returned to Munich (1950). His vividly descriptive writing, which is both factual and succinct, includes the novels Der Mensch ist gut (1918) and Das Ochsenfurter Männerquartet (1927), an autobiography Links, wo das Herz ist (1952), and plays. |
