| biography:
| Novelist, born in Den Bosch, S Netherlands. He made his debut in 1976 with Over de leegte in de wereld (About the World's Emptiness). His early work is related to the Revisor prose in that it deals with the problematic relation between human thought and language on the one hand, and reality on the other. With the novel Kaplan (1986) he left this postmodernist dilemma behind and turned to a traditional way of storytelling. Important themes in his work are the Jewish identity and the father–son relationship. |
