| biography:
| Franciscan liberation theologian, born in Concordia, NW Brazil. He was ordained in Brazil in 1964, studied at Würzburg, Louvain, Oxford, and Munich, and became professor of systematic theology in Petrópolis, Rio. His best-known work, Jesus-Christ Liberator (1972), offers hope and justice for the oppressed rather than religious support of the status quo in Church and society. He has written several books on reforming Church structures from grass-roots ‘basic communities’, including Church: Charism and Power (1984), which provoked official ecclesiastical censure. |
