| English applied mathematician, known for his valuable work in surveying, navigation, and ballistics. He was probably self-educated, but his books on surveying and navigation went through many editions in the 16th-c. He took part in Thomas Wyatt's rebellion in 1554, was condemned to death, but later pardoned and fined. |
