| Physicist, born in Zürich, Switzerland. Brought to the USA as an infant, he grew up in California. He served in World War 1, and studied in England and at the University of Chicago (1919–23). He spent the rest of his career at the University of California, Berkeley, remaining active after his retirement (1958). He was a specialist in gaseous electronics, wrote 12 textbooks and c.180 scientific papers, and was a beloved mentor for his students throughout his career as a professor. |
