| French statesman and prime minister (1936–7, 1938, 1946–7), born in Paris, France. A lawyer, he was elected to the chamber in 1919, becoming one of the leaders of the Socialist Party. He led ‘popular front’ governments in 1936 and 1938, achieving a series of labour reforms. During World War 2 he was interned in Germany. He remained the leader of the Socialists on his return, and in 1946 was elected prime minister of the six-week caretaker government. |
