| Writer, born in Montpellier, S France. In 1929 he founded, with Paulette Doucet, who was to become his wife, Le Cabaret du poète pendu and discovered Surrealism. His collected poetry includes Ne pas voir plus loin que le Bout de son Sexe (1936), J'arbre comme un Cadavre (1937), and Hurle à la Vie (1940). Regarded as the ‘father’ of the French ‘roman noir’, he introduced the fictional private detective, Nestor Burma, whose first adventure appeared in 120 Rue de la Gare (1943). The later books inspired a popular television series. |
