| Jewish religious leader, born in Lissa, Prussia (now Leszno, Poland). He was rabbi (1912–42) in Berlin, and was the political leader of German Jewry when the Nazis came to power. He was imprisoned in the Theresienstadt concentration camp (1942–5), and after the war became a lecturer in Britain. |
