| biography:
| Icelandic explorer, the son of Erik the Red, the first European to reach America. He introduced Christianity to Greenland, and c.1000 discovered land which he named Vinland after the vines he found growing there. It is still uncertain where Vinland actually is and whether he was indeed the first to find it. Two Icelandic sagas, Eiríks Saga and Groenlendinga Saga, tell the story of the Norse discovery and attempted colonization of North America, 500 years before Christopher Columbus arrived in the area. |
