| Poet and playwright, born in Madrid, Spain. Considered the most influential Neoclassical literary figure of the Spanish Enlightenment, he supported the French Encyclopaedists and translated the works of Molière and Shakespeare. His social satires include the plays La comedia nueva (1792, The New Comedy) and El sí de las niñas (1806, The Maiden's Consent). From 1814 he lived in France, and after his death his remains were taken to Madrid. |
