| biography:
| Documentary film-maker, born in the Canary Islands, Spain. Born to British parents, he began making films at age 14, then went to the USA at age 17. After serving as a combat cameraman with the US Army in World War 2, he worked with Robert Flaherty and other important American documentary film-makers. He was among the pioneers in using portable equipment and the cinéma vérité style, and founded the film department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Among his best known films is Monterey Pop (1968). |
