| biography:
| Physiologist, born in Modena, N Italy. Ordained in 1757, he studied law at Bologna, then switched to physics. He was professor at Reggio College (1754), Modena (1760), and Pavia (1769 onwards). His work centred on regeneration and reproduction in a wide range of animals, including snails and amphibians, and he carried out successful transplantation experiments. Despite his belief in the preformation theory and his misconceptions about the nature of semen, he was the first to use artificial insemination on small animals, and on a dog. |
