| biography:
| Mexican soldier and political leader, president of the Mexican Republic (1934–40), born in Jiquilpan, WC Mexico. He joined the revolutionary army in 1913, was a general by 1923, and Governor of Michoacán (1928–32). He rose from relative obscurity through the patronage of former president Plutarco Calles. Cárdenas wrested control of the government from Calles and instituted a broad programme of social and economic reforms. Often wrongly accused of being a Communist, he carried out the long overdue promises of the 1910 revolution, ensuring Mexico's stability. |
