| Aviator, born in Rockford, Illinois, USA. He trained at West Point (1927), transferred to the Air Corps (1930), and rose to command a bomber wing in England (1942–3). During the 1950s he held a series of senior commands, including the North American Air Defence Command. He retired in 1962 to become a vice-president of Pan American World Airways, and was later a consultant to the aviation industry. |
