| US naval officer, born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, USA. He joined the navy in 1807 and became a captain in 1832. While commanding the East India Squadron (1840–2) he conducted diplomatic initiatives that led to the Open Door Policy and the first American-Chinese treaty (1844). |
