| Catholic prelate, born in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Ordained in 1922, he was made Bishop of Bridgeport, CT (1953) and Archbishop of Baltimore (1961), becoming a cardinal (1965) and retiring in 1974. Known for his ecumenism and for liberal positions on social issues, he played a prominent role at the Second Vatican Council and energetically implemented its changes. |
