| Music critic, born in Flushing, New York, USA. He studied art but then gravitated to music, teaching himself the fundamentals and taking up criticism. He wrote for a number of periodicals, among them Harper's Weekly (1901–13), North American Review (1915–23), and the New York Herald Tribune (1923–39). From 1923 he also wrote programme notes for the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. |
