| Baroque classical painter, born in Paris, France. One of the founders of the Royal Academy of painting and sculpture, he was influenced by the Fontainebleau School and later by Poussin and Vouet. His works include Pope Nicolas V before the body of St Francis (1630, Louvre) and Panthée devant Cyrus (c.1637–8). |
