| President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (1997–2001), born in Kalemi (Shaba Province), E Congo (formerly Zaire, and earlier, Belgian Congo). Educated in France, he was a guerrilla fighter against the Mobutu regime for three decades, receiving support from the Eastern bloc and hosting, for a short time in the 1960s, Ché Guevara. Following his succession to the presidency, he banned all political parties. He was assassinated by one of his bodyguards |
