| biography:
| Artist, born in Manchester, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He worked as a clerk in the city all his life, but studied art in his spare time, and from 1939 produced many pictures of the Lancashire industrial scene which became immensely popular after his death, mainly in brilliant whites and greys, peopled with scurrying stick-like men and women. A major retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Royal Academy in 1976. |
