| Novelist, born in Neepawa, Manitoba, C Canada. She graduated from United College (now Winnipeg University) in 1947 - the same year she married John Laurence (separated 1962), a civil engineer. His job took them to England, Somaliland, and Ghana, which inspired her early poetry and travel books. This Side Jordan (1960), her first novel, was set in Ghana. She moved to England in 1962 and wrote her famous Manawaka series: The Stone Angel (1964), A Jest of God (1966), The Fire-Dwellers (1969), A Bird in the House (1970), and The Diviners (1974). |
