| Physical chemist, born in Oslo (formerly Christiania), Norway. He studied at the Norwegian Institute of Technology and under Debye at Zürich, and in 1928 he went to Yale, where he studied and then taught for the rest of his career (1934–72). He became a US citizen in 1945. His researches in solution chemistry and in chemical thermodynamics led to him receiving the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1968. |
