| Writer, bookseller, and academic, born in Wichita Falls, Texas, USA. He studied at North Texas State College (now University) (1958 BA), Rice University (1960 MA), and at Stanford (1960). He then taught at several institutions and was co-owner of a book store in Washington, DC (1970), where he lived. His first novel Horseman, Pass By (1961, Jesse H Jones Award in 1962) was filmed as the Academy Award-winning Hud (1963). This and subsequent early novels were semi-autobiographical and centred on the frustrations of ranch life. He wrote the screenplay for his novel The Last Picture Show (1966, Oscar Best Picture, 1972). He went on to write a trilogy of novels with urban settings comprising Moving On (1970), All My Friends Are Going to Be Strangers (1972), and Terms of Endearment (1977). His best-selling frontier epic Lonesome Dove (1985) won a Pulitzer Prize in 1986. |
