| biography:
| Australian mining industrialist, born in Perth, Western Australia. In 1934 he leased claims for mining blue asbestos, and developed a processing plant. After making a forced landing in bad weather, he discovered substantial iron ore deposits in the Pilbara region, and concluded mining agreements with a number of companies, thus initiating the growth of Australian extractive industries. He went on to make further discoveries, including Rhodes Ridge, the largest iron ore deposit in the world. He held controversial right-wing views on politics and Aboriginal affairs, and in 1974 formed a secessionist movement in Western Australia with the aim of better political representation. By the late 1980s his personal wealth was estimated to be $A60 million, and the family feuds over the inheritance were much publicized after his death. |
