| biography:
| Ballet dancer and choreographer, born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He trained at the Royal Danish Ballet School and joined the company in 1923. As ballet master (1932–51) he was responsible for the enormous success of the company. From 1953 he was ballet master of the Paris Opéra, and opened a studio in Paris in 1964. |
