| Pretender to the throne, the son of a joiner. Exploited by Roger Simon, a priest from Oxford, because of his resemblance to Edward IV, he was coached to impersonate one of his sons imprisoned in the Tower. He was set up in Ireland in 1487 as, first, a son of Edward IV, and then as the Duke of Clarence's son, Edward, Earl of Warwick (1475–99). He had some success among Yorkist adherents, and was crowned at Dublin as Edward VI, but after landing in Lancashire with 2000 German mercenaries he was defeated at Stoke Field, Nottinghamshire. After imprisonment, he was supposedly employed in the royal kitchens. |
