| Indian statesman and prime minister (1964–6), born in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh, NC India. He joined the independence movement at 16, and was often imprisoned by the British. He excelled as a Congress Party official, and in Nehru's cabinet became minister of transport (1957), commerce (1958), and home affairs (1960). He succeeded Nehru as premier, but died in office from a heart attack, the day after signing a ‘no war’ agreement with Pakistan. |
