| Business entrepreneur, born in Kent, SE England, UK. Best known as chairman and managing director of Laker Airways (1966–82), he started his career in aviation with Short Brothers, was a member of the Air Transport Auxiliary (1941–6), and a manager with British United Airways (1960–5). In 1966 he headed the successful Laker Airways Ltd, but was severely set back by the failure of the ‘Skytrain’ fares-buster project (1982). Since 1992 he has been chairman and managing director of Laker Airways (Bahamas) Ltd. He was knighted in 1978. |
