| Cricketer and broadcaster, born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He was a member of the Surrey county side which won seven consecutive championships between 1952 and 1958. His off-spinners (along with the bowling of Tony Lock) were a large factor in England's domination of international cricket in the late 1950s. His great season was 1956, when he took 19 of the 20 Australian wickets in the Test Match at Old Trafford. He took 193 wickets in 46 Test matches and during his career (1946–64) took 1944 wickets (average 18·41). In later years he became a television commentator. |
