| Hungarian statesman, a leader of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution, born in Monok, N Hungary. He practised law, and became a political journalist, for which he was imprisoned (1837–40). In 1847, he became Leader of the Opposition in the Diet, and in 1848 demanded an independent government for Hungary. At the head of the Committee of National Defence, he was appointed provisional governor of Hungary (1849), but internal dissensions led to his resignation, and he fled to Turkey, and then to England. |
