| Queen of England for nine days in 1553, born in Bradgate, Leicestershire, the eldest daughter of Henry Grey, Marquess of Dorset, and great-granddaughter of Henry VII. In 1553 the Duke of Northumberland, foreseeing the death of Edward VI, aimed to secure the succession by marrying Jane (against her wish) to his fourth son, Lord Guildford Dudley. Three days after Edward's death (9 Jul), she was named as his successor, but was forced to abdicate in favour of Mary, who had popular support. She was imprisoned, and beheaded on Tower Green. |
