| biography:
| King of Naples, born in Naples, Campania, SW Italy. He succeeded his father, Charles III of Anjou-Durazzo, in 1386, with his mother, Margherita of Durazzo, as regent, but had to fight to take his crown back from Louis II of Anjou. Styling himself as the pope's advocate, he occupied Rome and took Umbria and Latium. He was defeated by Louis II at Roccasecca in 1411, and had to relinquish to antipope John XXIII the territories he had taken from the Papal States, but managed to obtain recognition as the only King of Naples in 1413. |
