| Poet and playwright, born in Bondaroy, C France. He studied in Paris and was influenced by Pierre de Ronsard and Joachim du Bellay. In his important De l'art de la tragédie, which appeared in a collection (1572), he advocated the modelling of French tragedy on classical lines. He wrote a tragedy Saül le furieux (1562). Among his most notable poems are Le Courtisan retiré and Le Prince nécessaire. |
